Wild silk moth refers to silk producing moth which lives in the wild and are not domesticated (like the Bombyx mori).

There are approximately 160,000 species of moths in the world, many of these moths create unique cocoons. There are thought to be thousands of unused moth cocoons in various parts of Indonesia and the world, awaiting development by the community.

With a lifetime devotion encompassing continuous study, innovations and award-winning researches for more than 60 years, Dr Hiromu Akai is an Einstein in the world of wild silkmoth.

Facteurs de réussite

December 2021, Dr Akai passed on the baton of Chairman of Japanese Society of Wild Silk Moths to Professor Dr Atsushi Kobayashi. May his visions of Cricula Trifenestrata live on for the good of all.

According to Dr Hiromu Akai; porous wild silk threads are produced ONLY from insects belonging to the Saturniidae family.

Cricula Trifenestrata which is abundantly found as “pests” in Indonesia has the highest porosity in its wild silk thread, 2nd only to Argema Mittrei; a moth native to the rain forests of Madagascar.

Enseignements tirés

When we apply a suitable biodiversity knowledge, we can change the perspective of a community. In this case, the Cricula Trifenestrata larvae which were labelled as pests are transformed into a valuable source of income when the local community learns the utilisation of the Cricula Trifenestrata golden cocoons into wild silk yarn and crafts.

Collaboration across cultures and nations is paramount as wild silk moths live in various regions of the world. Therefore, it is important to have reliable and trustworthy channel of communication, in order to avoid disinformation.

A research needs to have a strong economic value in order to sustain and grow in the long run.

It is paramount to have trustworthy channels of communication across borders and languages in order to prevent disinformation.
