Résumé

Local communities in coastal areas were supported to face to erosion and coastal pollution through: - Awareness raising on vulnerability to these threats; - Reduction of the effects of coastal erosion on the city of Aného to ensure the integrity of the area and enable sustainable socio-economic development: refection of the west bank of the mouth of the Lake Togo, rehabilitation of the road along the shore and protection of threatened homes and riverside hotel infrastructure.

Défis

Togo's coast has been affected for decades by erosion and pollution. The recent worsening of this situation pushed fishermen to turn to improper extraction of natural resources such as sand and gravels, thus affecting the coastal and marine ecosystems. In 2009, houses of and the city hall of the city of Aného were threatened with destruction as a direct cause of erosion.

Bénéficiaires

Local communities and fishermen of the coast of Togo and of the city of Aného.

Les impacts positifs

- Increase of political will and awareness of populations to adapt to the threats of coastal erosion and pollution; - Improvement of housing security: the construction work has helped secure homes and premises; - Communities mobility, development of income generating activities and water supply facilitated by the construction of a new access road; - Favorable conditions for fishing created thanks to the rehabilitation of the banks of the mouth of the lake. The structure now allows fishermen to land full-sized canoes, thus guaranteeing them a closer access to their customers and facilitating the supply of inputs needed to fishing off.
