As we celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) on May 22nd, it is crucial to focus on the many solutions that practitioners are spearheading on the ground, and that can be replicated to achieve global conservation goals. In alignment with the theme of IDB 2024, "Be part of the Plan", we explore how the PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet initiative supports the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), or “the Biodiversity Plan” for short.

Reflecting on past milestones, such as the 15th UN Biodiversity Conference (CBD COP15) held in Montreal, where countries endorsed the GBF, PANORAMA's role as a recognized resource for knowledge management and capacity building remains significant.

The Biodiversity Plan, with its 4 Goals and 23 Targets, serves as a beacon for global cooperation and underscores the urgency of collective action to safeguard our planet's biodiversity. PANORAMA is well-positioned to support this, bridging access to practical knowledge from the ground with global policy agreements.

Through its extensive network and knowledge base, PANORAMA is actively contributing to this collective effort:

  • PANORAMA's platform serves as a hub for sharing best practices, lessons learned, and innovative solutions among biodiversity practitioners globally.
  • By facilitating replication of successful approaches across geographies and sectors, PANORAMA supports the scaling and adaptation of proven solutions in diverse contexts.
  • PANORAMA's collaboration with the CBD Secretariat and the Knowledge Management for Biodiversity (KM4B) Initiative amplifies the impact of biodiversity planning, policy formulation, and decision-making processes. The collaboration focuses, among other things, on sharing digital content, organizing thematic events, and fostering communities of practice to accelerate GBF implementation.
  • By being open for anyone to contribute, PANORAMA amplifies the visibility of local solutions and encourages collaboration amongst those involved in conservation.
  • Through new funding received from the German Ministry for the Environment (BMUV), PANORAMA will engage with a small number of partner countries to support knowledge management as part of the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), aligning closely with other relevant initiatives.

As we celebrate IDB 2024 and look forward to COP16 in Colombia, PANORAMA reaffirms its commitment to supporting the global biodiversity agenda.

PANORAMA is uniquely placed to provide visibility and recognition of practical knowledge from the ground, complementing other platforms that focus on biodiversity data and information rather than knowledge.
