I am a forester by profession, and as a growing FLR expert, have come to appreciate the importance of managing trees and forests as part of an ecosystem for increased and multiple benefits to communities. In my role as Malawi’s Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) Focal Point, I facilitated the national Forest Landscape Restoration opportunities assessment and implementation strategy development in 2017. Together with other technical partners, I facilitated the development of a Forest Landscape Restoration monitoring framework in 2018.
Through my role as a Programme Officer with IUCN, I am supporting the Ministry of Forestry and Natural Resources, Department of Forestry and other government agencies with the integration of the assessment results into government planning, project development and budgeting.
My work is expected to support the upscaling of FLR implementation while shifting incentives and policies for Malawi to achieve the 4.5 million hectare goal for restoration of degraded landscapes by 2030.
