Employment initiatives to improve protected areas and community livelihoods

An initiative funded by the South African Government’s Expanded Public Works Programme provides poverty and income relief through temporary work for the unemployed to carry out socially useful activities to improve the Table Mountain National Park, such as clearing picnic areas and trails. Significantly, in line with government policy, half are women and disabled and young people are also well represented, and promotion to regular employment is possible.

Impacts
Following the neglect and misuse of the Edith Stephens Nature Reserve, a deal was brokered to spend the money designated for a new fence for the park on paying unemployed local people to clear and restore the wetland instead, creating a sense of community ownership
