Head of Biodiversity Division-Project Manager

Abir is a geoscience engineer and expert in water, biodiversity, and sustainable development, with over 13 years of experience in environmental policy advice, project coordination, and strategic planning across Africa. She holds a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences from the University of Tunis El Manar, where she also completed her engineering degree in water and environmental sciences.

Since joining the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) in 2015, she has contributed to a wide range of initiatives addressing biodiversity conservation, water management, desertification, climate finance, and the integration of SDG-related indicators into national and regional planning. She has led multi-country and multi-partner programmes, combining scientific expertise with policy engagement and institutional support.

In 2020, she was appointed Project Management Officer for the regional programme on ecosystem accounting and natural capital indicators in Africa, coordinating technical cooperation and stakeholder engagement across several countries. Since 2024, she heads the Biodiversity Division at OSS, where she oversees regional initiatives on nature-based solutions, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity policy alignment with the Global Biodiversity Framework, and support to national implementation processes through science-based tools and geospatial monitoring systems.
