Restoration Ecologist / Nature-Based Solutions:
As a Project Manager for TRCA, he worked with a great team to restore large areas of meadow and prairie in the Toronto region to enhance biodiversity, sequester carbon, minimize flooding, increase pollinator habitat and educate the public.
As Co-director of Earth Connection Center for Eco-education and Leadership and Planet Healers, he lived remotely for four years in Yucatan, Mexico restoring the tropical forest, creating a biological reserve, and worked with the local Mayan people. Over those years, we hosted over 40 international volunteers and mentored 2 indigenous Mexican women for 4 months doing their environmental engineering practicum for their thesis. This time showed him that his biological conservation, propagation, and ecological restoration skills apply to any ecosystem.
As the owner-operator of Acorus Restoration, a native plant nursery and ecological consulting firm that he has run for 26 years, he is a leader at the forefront of ecology and ecological restoration in Canada has done all types of biological and restoration work and has worked with all levels of government, businesses, volunteers and homeowners. He has also done all aspects of business management and commercially propagated over 350 species of wetland, woodland, and prairie species.
He intimately knows the ecology and propagation of plants for ecosystems in Canada and brought that wisdom to restoring 100s of habitats including The Meadoway, High Park, Don Valley, Centennial Creek, Rouge, Humber, Highway 407, Windsor-Essex Parkway etc. He enjoys the synergy that happens when working on large-scale projects coordinating teams.
He was also a volunteer firefighter, took on roles as chair and vice-chair of the Norfolk Counties Environmental Advisory Committee, vice-chair, membership secretary, and newsletter editor for the local naturalist group. At Blazingstar Learning Centre and in the community he gave many workshops on conservation and ecological restoration. He has also mentored over 60 interns at his farm. So being a leader, spokesperson, mentor and teacher are roles comfortable to him.
In terms of ecological consultation, he has worked all over, in all conditions, both alone and with a team, and done biological surveys for 407 east and west extensions (ELC), wetland evaluations for the MNRF, Anuran surveys, mist-netting, small mammal surveys, radio tracking, and birder. Always curious to learn more and submitted his CERP certification.
