The initiative aims to support sustainable development by encouraging responsible food production, protecting biodiversity, and promoting local economic impact. Only recognized UNESCO Global Geoparks can use the GEOfood brand, ensuring that the raw materials come from within or near these geoparks.

The initiative started in 2015, since then more than 100 companies have been engaged whithin UNESCO Global Geoparks territories, at the moment 28 UNESCO Geoparks are implementing it with an estimated impact on mor ethan millions people between local inhabitants and visitors. Before GEOfood, there was not existing any common criteria for developing local food and menu, empowering local communities into UNESCO Global Geoparks.
