A Partnership with the Wine Industry to Sustain Protected Areas and Ecosystem Services in Chile

Snapshot Solution
Biodiversity in productive areas
VCCB - Viña Cono Sur

Through relevant scientific research and science-producer collaboration processes, we contribute to the identification and creation of private conservation areas in agricultural properties, integrating the redesign of properties and their management so that they coexist with biodiversity. This work is carried out by the Wine, Climate Change and Biodiversity Program with the support of 21viñas Chilenas since 2008.

Impacts

21 vineyards collaborate in this scientific initiative, protecting 26,499 hectares of Mediterranean ecosystem located in the central valley of Chile. Of these areas under private protection, 56% have a baseline of flora and fauna, where we have recorded endangered species, invasive exotic species and species such as the gato colocolo and the prodigious orchid. On average, these vineyards protect 4.2 hectares of native vegetation for each hectare produced, and 2,108 people have been trained (72% of wine industry workers).
