Valuing Italy’s marine environment: connecting interests for conservation

Worldrise, an Italian NGO founded and run by young professionals, has designed and developed the Full Immersion Cinque Terre project to encourage the appreciation of the Cinque Terre MPA environmental values while empowering professionally marine science students. The project, entirely coordinated by Worldrise, established a partnership between the MPA management authority, the diving centres that operate in the MPA and the University of Genova.

Impacts

Within the first year of the project we managed to achieve the following results: Delivered an educational training course for the diving centres to effectively comunicate the values and the benefits of the MPA that were summarised into a creative infographic. Professionally formed five students that obtained diving certifications and were also directly involved in the data collection, analysis and results interpretation of a research project that assessed the economic benefits of the MPA for the local community Successfully promoted the project on Social Media and presented it at World Parks Congress Developed the first systematic educational program for the MPA in partnership with the diving industry Facilitated dialogue and collaboration between stakeholders, university and the MPA authority
