Mobilising More for Climate Competition for Conservation Change-Makers
The Mobilising More 4 Climate (MoMo4C) competition provides a platform, funding and expert advice to local entrepreneurs whose business cases offer climate adaptation and mitigation solutions. In 2019, The Netherlands Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN NL) initiated and organised the competition in Tanzania, in partnership with the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania Centre (SAGCOT) and the Netherlands Embassy in Tanzania. Together, they brought groundbreaking local climate business cases to boost sustainable entrepreneurship and climate adaptation in Tanzania. New partnerships in Uganda and Ghana are in the works for 2020.
The winner of the Tanzania edition, Birk Agri, combines beekeeping and pollination to enhance the productivity of avocado trees and beans. Birk Agri’s winning package included a €25,000 reward, as well as technical expertise and access to the network of the SAGCOT Centre, to expand their business model sustainably.

Impacts
Tackling climate change requires the concerted effort of multiple stakeholders; the MoMo4C competition provides the space to do just that. It helps to highlight and connect businesses who have valuable solutions for addressing climate change and other environmental problems, with resources to grow, and a local initiative, SAGCOT, whose mission is to promote sustainable agriculture entrepreneurship. Overall, the goal is to build a sustainable ecosystem of solution-providers to develop a more sustainable world.
For example, winning company Birk Agri’s solution has three benefits: beekeeping is critical to preserving the bee population and maintaining biodiversity, increased and sustainable food productivity addresses food security and stable livelihood, and finally, soil-less avocado farmers use less polybags and water.
