Schooldakrevolutie, or School Roof Revolution is an independent organisation working on solar-powered education in the Netherlands. We advise school boards in the decisionmaking process towards the installation of solar panels on school roofs by, for example, providing detailed business cases. Additionally, we stimulate local municipalities to facilitate the sustainability of school buildings. We also motivate teachers to use the presence of solar panels at school in their classrooms to teach children about solar energy, sources of renewable energy and climate change. Through these efforts, we help to accelerate the energy transition while empowering the young generation to learn about sustainable energy.

School Roof Revolution comprises a core team of 10 members who work on daily management, coaching and advising schoolboards, communications, support in education and on the development of a coherent regional approach. Next to this 16 volunteers pave the way for cooperation at the provincial and municipality level.

  • On our school roof map, one can find (nearly) all schools in the Netherlands including their status with regards to solar panels and including scans providing a first insight in the potential of a given school roof.
  • There are approximately 1,200 schoolboards in the Netherlands, representing around 9,000 schools. We have contact with 640 schoolboards representing 4,700 schools.
  • We have analyzed 346 property portfolios. In this way, we map the potential for these schools to contribute to Dutch climate objectives and reveal which buildings are being renovated, rebuilt or are ready for the installation of solar panels.
  • We assisted 627 schools that are ready to install solar panels within the forthcoming 1.5 years with their decision making by providing a business case, establishing cooperation with their municipality, finding the right type of funding and helping them to request a tender from solar power companies.
  • In 2020 53 schools installed solar panels as a result of our advice, support and business cases.
