Methodology for the creation of roadmaps for adaptation and decarbonization of organizations
The NDC Action project, funded by the IKI initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme, achieved a significant milestone in 2023. Through a consultancy led by the Climate Lead Group with the support of the Alianza Empresarial para el Desarrollo, the project developed the first Methodology for the creation of roadmaps for the adaptation and decarbonization of organizations. This document, from the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica, is intended to serve as a basis for aligning efforts at the country level, from the national to the specific. The Methodology underwent meticulous review by a team of national and international technical experts and was piloted to create roadmaps for seven organizations in the food subsector and eleven organizations in the commerce sector.
Impacts
The process of technological transformation towards a low-emission and resilient industry benefits from the creation of decarbonization and adaptation roadmaps for organizations to guide the transformation process. Organizational decarbonization and adaptation roadmaps establish greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets and adaptation actions, which can be developed for a production sector or an organization.
The Methodology for creating roadmaps for the adaptation and decarbonization of organizations considers technical, financial, economic, and environmental aspects. Its implementation relies on sectoral and national inputs aimed at aligning policies at different levels of execution. Moreover, its use enables the comparison, traceability, and transparency of roadmaps for the decarbonization and adaptation of private sector organizations.
As a component of the Methodology, the Business Climate Roadmap Tool (HRCE) has been developed with the support of the German Development Cooperation - GIZ, through the ACCION Climate Project. The HRCE is a computational tool that streamlines the creation of decarbonization and adaptation roadmaps for organizations or sectors.
