Summary of the process

The 2 provided building blocks must be used together to realize a successful replication of the castanea henryi tree planting project.

Building Blocks
Building Blocks of the Castanea Henryi Tree Planting Project

The purpose of this building block is to inform the procedure on starting and implementing  the Castanea Henryi Tree Planting Project to all interested individuals and parties.

Enabling factors

The condtions enabling the success of this building block of the Castanea Henryi Tree Planting Project include the acquirement of the castanea henryi tree seedlings, the possession of pertinent planting technologies, the ownership of the available land and suitable climate for planting.

Lesson learned

A potential planter must learn the castanea henryi tree planting technologies to start the real planting work in order to have a sucessful planting experience.

The acquirement of castanea henryi tree seeds

The purpose of this building block is to inform interested individuals and parties the procedure of obtaining the seeds of  castanea henryi trees.

Enabling factors

The seeds of  castanea henryi trees can be obtained locally in countries with the castanea henryi trees or purchased from China.

Lesson learned

The  seeds of castanea henryi trees must be stored in a dry and cool place to ensure a long-lasting quality for reproductivity.

Impacts

People planting castanea henryi trees receive stably increasing income from this planting business in southern China. On each piece of hillside land with an area of 660 square meters covered by fruit (nut) bearing castanea henryi trees, the annual harvested nuts can be sold for about 440 US $ in 2018. Incomes from selling highly mature castanea henryi tree stems and branches are even much higher. Besides generating sustainable income, this solution also bring great environmental benefits.

Beneficiaries

The castanea henryi tree can be planted on hillside land and mountain regions to produce natural grain with a great nutritional value.

Therefore, the planting of castanea henryi tree can relieve the pressure of the shortage of arable land.

A harvest of Castanea Henryi Tree Nuts from

                                           Barren Hillside Land

Mr. Xu Chenglin and his poor family planted 100 mu of castanea henryi trees in barren hillside land in Huangqiao village, longfu Town, Liuyang City, Hunan Province, China in the spring of 2016. The planted castanea henryi tree species have the advantages of strong adaptability, resistance to drought, early maturity and high yield.

2019 is the fourth year of the planting of these Castanea henryi trees. In total, about 11000 pound of Castanea henryi tree nuts were harvested and picked in May 2019 and sold at a wholesale price of 10.8 Yuan per pound, bringing in  an income of 118800 Yuan of income ( the equivalent of about 16.700 US $).

A barren hillside land can also bring a good wealth to a poor farmer family.
