San Pedro Mártir Island was designated a Biosphere Reserve on June 13, 2002 after consultation with the community of Bahía de Kino, who have actively participated in its management for more than 24 years. Collaboration has involved sharing traditional knowledge, citizen science training for about 30 people, and contributing to the reserve's management program. Environmental education, led by 14 local members. These local change agents have acquired capacities and skills to be able to carry out educational activities and community events that convey the importance of biodiversity and its ecosystem services and invite the community to take care of its natural resources. This cooperation has resulted in international recognition for the exemplary management of the reserve.
