Ikam Expeditions

Voices of the Forest, the series that promotes wildlife observation and the stories of those who strive to conserve it.

With funding from the Tourism Emprende program of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, the ecotourism company Ikam Expeditions presented the audiovisual series "Voices of the Forest", which shows incredible expeditions in search of unique wildlife species in northern Peru.

The first season of the digital series has 5 chapters:

  • Hummingbird route
  • Representative birds of the Alto Mayo
  • Nocturnal fauna in Tingana
  • Wildlife in Tingana
  • Birding in Moyobamba

Context
Challenges addressed
Land and Forest degradation
Loss of Biodiversity
Ecosystem loss
Lack of access to long-term funding
Lack of alternative income opportunities
Health
Lack of technical capacity

Our solution contributes to strengthen conservation and ecotourism ventures based on wildlife observation.

The challenges are essentially to make these ventures sustainable, and that the tourism and other sustainable activities they carry out can contribute to reduce deforestation and improve the living conditions of the families working in the activity and the local community.

Process
Summary of the process

They are definitely connected. In a project like this it is essential to know the biodiversity, to monitor wild species and their scenarios. It is also important to find new ways to communicate and make people learn about it and reflect on its importance and conservation.

Building Blocks
Biodiversity awareness

We were aware of the local biodiversity, and at the same time we knew what we were looking to show in terms of biological importance and possible national and international audience interest.

In addition, we consider the product to be very valuable in terms of photographic record.

Enabling factors

- Presence of endemic and/or restricted birds

- Fauna and flora monitoring

- Constant field trips

- Relevant photographic and video recordings, in good quality.

- Equipment and materials available

Lesson learned

The dedication we had in the wildlife observation activity was important. Also the previous wildlife records were important, thanks to the fact that we had adequate equipment and informative material to build the stories.

Another important lesson was to provoke interest in all participants. It is important to remember that the series was recorded in different spaces and our work was also to integrate the people who work here in the making of the series, their participation was key.

Biodiversity communication

The creation of the series came about because we identified the need to communicate differently about biodiversity.

During our expeditions we have recorded in high quality videos several species, and in our networks we published those videos. However, we saw that there was little interaction from people who did not know about the birds or those who were interested.

In that sense, we came up with the idea of making a digital series, with the intention of showing the biodiversity of Alto Mayo in a different way. We had to design the series, evaluate possible recording scenarios, select fauna, build stories, plan logistics, make alliances with audiovisual production companies, expert professionals, audiovisual production, and post production.

Enabling factors
  • Audiovisual production planning
  • Creation of nature and conservation stories for each episode
  • Experts (in biodiversity and audiovisual production)
  • Quality wildlife audiovisual recording
Lesson learned
  • A lot of learning about the implications of developing an audiovisual project.
  • New ways of communicating about biodiversity and conservation
  • It has been important to reflect on the importance of the sites where conservation actions are carried out.

Impacts

The impact is mainly communicational, our idea as an ecotourism company was to show our expeditions based on wild species and conservation areas, including Natural Protected Areas, private conservation areas, Regional Conservation Areas and other modalities.

To date, the audiovisual material has been exhibited in social networks (Instagram, Facebook and YouTube) of the company and allied organizations (Conservation International and Bosque de Protección Alto Mayo).

It is also important to note that this type of material is unprecedented in the department and in the country.

Beneficiaries

Mainly entrepreneurs who are dedicated to offering various services related to wildlife watching (individuals and families, NGOs that administer or manage a natural area, other community groups, among others).

Recordings
Ikam Expeditions

The history of our project dates back a long time, since the beginning of 2019 we have been recording images of wild species, however, we wanted to design an audiovisual proposal that would allow us to show our material to a wider audience. Despite not having much experience in audiovisual projects we designed one, we got funding through an application for funding from the Peruvian government and from that we began to develop the audiovisual project.

We were able to partner with an audiovisual production company and develop the project with them.

It was challenging for the Ikam Expeditions team to work in a new area, especially with the demands that the project required. Also, Julio C. Tello, manager of Ikam Expeditions had the role of host of the series, a task that he had not done before and required a lot of effort and previous preparation.
