With a view to the participative management of Burkina Faso's Parc National W, the park's management team is working with local communities to develop trails, salt pans and ponds.

This type of collaboration, known as HIMO (Haute Intensité de Main d'Oeuvre), involves local populations in the management of Burkina Faso's Parc National W and its immediate environment, in return for a small fee. This involvement is a source of motivation for these populations, who become more involved in the conservation of forest and wildlife resources by systematically denouncing poachers and raising awareness of practices harmful to Parc National W.

Impacts

We have learned the following lessons from this experience:

  • Involving communities in park management optimizes results;
  • Involving communities in activities contributes to their socio-economic development.

This collaboration with communities is a win-win partnership and contributes to peaceful coexistence between park managers and the local population, which is essential for the sustainability of resources.
