Climate change is affecting natural and economic ecosystems in every country on every continent. Intense droughts, increasingly heavy rainfalls, extreme temperatures, water scarcity, fires, flooding, declining biodiversity, famine – the impacts are multiple. Scientists agree that one of the main – and man-made – drivers of climate change are greenhouse gas emissions.
Many global frameworks and agreements have been developed to create pathways and guide actions that combat climate change, including the Paris Agreement and UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Also, governments, organisations, companies, civil society, and many others are already formulating and implementing concrete actions to reduce emissions in their countries, regions, cities, and communities. PANORAMA Mitigation aims to compile tangible and replicable solutions from around the world for developing, implementing and upscaling measures for a more sustainable, efficient, and -above all- low-carbon development.

On Saturday, November 12th, PANORAMA Mitigation was launched during the Global Landscape Forum’s conference GLF Climate parallel to COP27.
“A lot of valuable experiences have already been made and offer highly interesting insights which deserve to be shared with a broad community. PANORAMA has grown to be the key platform for sharing valuable experiences, lessons learned and success factors when it comes to designing and implementing projects for a healthy planet. The German government appreciates the efforts to complement the existing communities with the ones that address mitigation. We encourage a broad variety of stakeholders to participate and contribute to this new community”, stated Kristin Vorbeck, Deputy Head of the Unit for United Nations, 2030 Agenda, Developing and Emerging Countries; Environmental aspects of international climate and energy policy at the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), during her opening remarks at the launch event.

The community is coordinated by the German Development Cooperation within its project ACCION Clima, financed within the German government’s International Climate Initiative (IKI). GIZ accompanies the Costa Rican government on its path towards decarbonising its economy by strengthening the country’s climate governance with state and non-state actors alike, improving access to climate finance, and supporting concrete climate actions with a series of diverse actors. Also, ACCION Clima promotes and fosters national, regional and international knowledge exchange, disseminating Costa Rica’s experiences in implementing its Nationally Determined Contributions on a regional level, and coordinating knowledge exchange among IKI projects in Central America and the Caribbean.
The new community is open to anyone interested in sharing their solutions, including but not limited to cooperation agencies, private or public sector, academia, or others. Examples of relevant solutions may be successful mitigation actions in a community or region, new or enhanced mechanisms for financing climate action, relevant capacity-building measures for target groups, strategies to involve key groups in relevant decision-making processes, communication or awareness campaigns, among others.
