Introduction

At the Regional Workshop on Knowledge Management for Biodiversity (KM4B) for Africa workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, co-hosted by PANORAMA - Solutions for a Healthy Planet, a powerful convergence of national voices, local knowledge and global commitment unfolded. Seventy participants from over 40 countries across the continent came together to explore inclusive approaches to biodiversity knowledge management.

The regional workshop was convened by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and hosted by UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa (RSCA), from 21 to 24 July 2025.

Key messages from the leadership

The CBD Executive Secretary, Astrid Schomaker, officially opened the workshop, emphasizing the role of knowledge management in achieving the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and advancing national biodiversity policies. Also present was the UNDP RSCA Director, Matthias Naab. In his opening remarks, he quoted an African proverb,“Wisdom is like a baobab tree; no one individual can embrace it”- calling on participants to “embrace collective wisdom and regional solidarity to secure Africa’s biodiversity legacy for generations to come.”

“Africa holds extraordinary leadership, experience and innovation in biodiversity action. PANORAMA was created to unlock the collective intelligence of practitioners. By making real-world solutions visible and transferable, we support national implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework through shared learning and structured knowledge.” PANORAMA’s co-coordinator, Helga Mahler, reiterated in her opening remarks.

PANORAMA’s contribution and outcome

For four days, participants engaged in deep reflections on national priorities, policy alignment and regional collaboration.

PANORAMA was showcased as an inclusive knowledge management tool and methodology - supporting not only the documentation of National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs) but also the implementation, experiences and peer-to-peer exchange, more importantly, serving as a platform for institutional knowledge management. By converting practical experiences into living memory and knowledge, PANORAMA ensures that valuable lessons extend beyond project life cycles. It has proven to be a vital enabler for national governments and CBD Parties in advancing NBSAP and Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) implementation, including:

  • documenting national and sub-national good practices aligned with GBF targets
  • facilitating cross-country learning, replication and peer exchange
  • enhancing transparent reporting under the CBD - particularly qualitative knowledge management contributions such as Target 21
  • promoting stakeholder engagement and visibility.

During a hands-on session, participants explored the PANORAMA web platform and methodology, which supports structured documentation and sharing of practice-based solutions. Several national NBSAP experiences were captured on the PANORAMA web platform, during the session and documented as draft Solutions.

Most notably, the workshop created a vibrant space for peer-to-peer learning and the exchange of solid ideas on how to shape inclusive knowledge management for biodiversity – together with youth, academia, representatives of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Outcome

At the close of the workshop, a first-of-its-kind continental-level roadmap of Knowledge Management for Biodiversity draft document was developed. That is the ‘Regional Knowledge Agenda for Biodiversity, anchoring knowledge partnerships, infrastructures and mechanisms for sustained exchange.

Looking ahead

In line with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the CBD Secretariat and PANORAMA - Solutions for a Healthy Planet the workshop reaffirmed the partners’ shared commitment to strengthening inclusive biodiversity knowledge management. PANORAMA will continue to support countries in transforming their biodiversity strategies into living knowledge - by surfacing what works, why it works, and how it can inspire others for the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
