Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture

Context

Fish is a vital resource. Especially for increasing populations of developing countries, it contributes to combat malnutrition and provides employment for millions of families. However, unsustainable fishing activities are reducing existing fish stocks and contributing to economic losses. This is worsened by the lack of legal framework conditions and access to technical knowledge regarding sustainable fish production in aquaculture.

Objective

The Global Program Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture - implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) - is addressing these challenges by providing trainings, innovations, policy advice and facilitating stakeholder dialogues. Our aim is to contribute to food security by increasing access to fish products and boosting incomes from sustainable and resource-friendly fisheries and aquaculture.

Approach

More fish, more work: The project guides small and medium sized businesses on sustainable fish production and processing. Innovations are introduced to cut costs, increase production and minimize post-harvest losses.

Sustainable fish: Partnering with governments, the project advises the formulation and implementation of resource-sensitive fishing policies, strategies and action plans.

Tackling IUU Fishing: The project introduces registration and licensing for fishers and their vessels and supports regular inspections.
