Crowd Funding Campaign Using Kitabisa.com Platform

Sumatran Tiger Project, Forum HarimauKita and UNDP Indonesia started the campaign in conjunction of Global Tiger Day to bring awareness about Sapu Jerat campaign to local and national audiences. 

 

Sapu Jerat Crowd Funding to Protect Sumatran Tigers used local crowdfunding platform, Kitabisa.com that has enabled us to reach wider supporters (communities, philantropies, artists, influencers) by campaigning in social media. KItabisa.com generates funding online to support campaigns set up by organizations, individuals and communities. Sapu Jerat Crowd Funding to Protect Sumatran Tigers has given an examples for others to set up new campaign in supporting wildlife and biodiversity conservations.  

 

The Sapu Jerat campaign was also promoted using Sumatran Tiger, FHK and UNDP Indonesia social media channels and project's communication networks in four national parks. The networks consist of local journalists who - in coordination with Project Implementation Unit (PIU) in each landscape - continue to report Sumatran Tiger Project's initiatives, .   
 

First, modern communication infrastructures have enabled people in cities and regions to access the campaign. Second, building communication networks that target relevant stakeholders has enabled the campaign to get support and funding needed. By combining modern technology and targetted network, Sapu Jerat crowd funding campaign at Kitabisa.com has been successfully completed and the money will be used to clear tiger traps in national park areas. 

1. As part of Sumatran Tiger's communication strategy, the campaign should be strategically connected to communication network to increase the outreach and widens its impacts.

2. This communication network should be encouraged to be involved in the campaign. Different landscape uses different communication network and communication method, thus they should be generated accordingly

3. Coordination is the key to reach the target of the campaign in timely manner. Endorsements or supports from relevant stakeholders can be amplified by the communication network.  

4. Modern communication infrastructures by Kitabisa.com has enabled the campaign reaching targetted audiences.

Community exchange visits

Exchange visits were organized to places where the initiative has been active for some time and the implementation is on-going. For example, in order to acquire drought tolerant crops for local production, Ecofinder Kenya visited the Tangokona community in Busia County, Kenya where improved cassava and sweet potato varieties have been promoted and grown by local communities. The model was studied by Yala wetland communities, seeds purchased and farmers are now growing drought tolerant cassava and sweet potatoes.

  • Pay actual visit to model sites or farmers.
  • Availability of resources including transportation, learning facilitation at the place of visit.
  • Willingness to learn and practice the new skills among the interested stakeholders.
  • Local production of recommended drought resilient crop varieties can be achieved by learning and sharing of skills and ideas.
  • Farmers can embrace and practice what they see and can confirm to have worked in similar places.
  • The success of implementation of improved crop production and testing of new crop varieties may be dependent on prevaining weather conditions mainly rainfall amounts especially for rain-fed agriculture.

 

Stakeholders involvement and participation

This involves participation of all stakeholders at the local level in order to come up with locally viable solutions that all participants are comfortable with and that contribute to sustainable livelihoods and long term conservation of local biodiversity. We achieved this building block by involving stakeholders at different levels, i.e. at the meso or County level and micro or local community level. First, we engaged representatives of the Siaya County government departments  (such as Agriculture, Lands, Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources) and Civil society representatives working at the local and regional levels. A workshop was organised upon which the government and non-government actors discussed the challenges facing agriculture and biodiversity in relation to climate chage in the County and amicable and potential solutions sought from the participants. Secondly, local level meetings were held with community members and local leaders and resource persons including elders, retired government staff, health workers and conservation enthusiasts. The challenges facing agriculture and local biodiversity were sought and potential solutions reached. These were then analysed to come up with overal challenges and solutions from the stakeholders perspective.

  • Analysis and involvement of critical stakeholders to make sure that all people with interest are involved. This should include (1) government departments at the County or District levels, (2) Non-state actors including Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs), Community-based Organisations (CBOs) and Faith-based Organisations (FBOs) among others, and local communities
  • Recognition of the roles played by various stakeholders.
  • Recognition of potential benefits and benefit sharing from the proceeds of conservation.

 

  • Stakeholder involvement at both meso or County/District level and micro/community level ensures potential for inclusion and use of results in local policy change
  • Forums bringing government and non-state actors contribute to harmonisation of conflicting views and ideas and ensure potential for harmony in implementation of various strategies. However, we experienced many opposing views during strategy discussions pitting the government officers and the civil society.
  • Potential for benefit sharing and incentives are critical for conservation of biodiversity at the local scale.
  • Local communities are willing to participate in biodiversity conservation initiatives when alternative livelihoods can be provided.

 

Public Sector Guidance Coupled with Private Sector Initiatives

To address a social need for transportation facilities equitably accessible, understandable and usable to people of all ages and abilities, the national government enacted a law to promote smooth transportation to the elderly, disabled and others in 2006. It set a target to adopt the concept of Universal Design by 2020 for all public transportation facilities, including airports that serve more than 3,000 daily passengers. Under this law, the government developed “Universal Design Guideline”, which is also applicable to improvement of Haneda International Airport. Not only did TIAT follow this guideline, it as a private company made extensive efforts to offer a comfortable space and enhanced accessibility to all types of airport visitors.

A key tenet of the philosophy of Universal Design is that the facility improvements needed to support people with disabilities can benefit everyone. Increased physical accessibility and hospitality satisfy customers with the high-quality of services and contribute to increasing the number of airport users to some extent. While the national government plays a pivotal role in adopting the Universal Design concept in public transportation facilities, private terminal operators should be motivated to proactively install innovative technologies and unconventional services for long-term cost saving and customer (passenger) satisfaction.

Integrated Access to and from Urban Centers

The design of the airport itself is half of the success equation - how to ensure seamless door-to-door travel experience for various people including the elderly and disabled is a key. Haneda International Airport Terminal is directly connected to the city’s major urban centers by two railway companies. When the new terminal and stations were built, TIAT and these two railway companies collaborated to get rid of physical barriers across facilities for people with mobility disadvantages. For example, a hall in the terminal allows passengers to directly access to departure/arrival lobbies, public transportation services (e.g., Monorail, railway, buses, and taxies) and a car parking area via flat and straight paths. Several large-size elevators set in the station can also carry a large volume of passengers between the platforms and the arrival/departure floors. A railway line redirected the guideway from the existing platform at the domestic terminal to the second floor of the international terminal to produce flat passenger access from the station to the departure lobby. In addition, the both railway lines introduced movable step boards that bridge train vehicles and platforms for wheelchair users, and platform screen doors for passengers’ safety.

  • Coordination of facility design with railway companies providing access to the airport

Integrated access design between an airport terminal, ground transportation systems, and urban centers is critical for travelers with disabilities. In particular, it is essential to eliminate all types of level differences and floor gaps that can cause stress and hamper passengers from having seamless door-to-door travel experiences. Incorporating a centralized hall into the terminal benefits all users, as it enables smooth transfers among different transportation modes with barrier-free paths and, in turn, mitigates pedestrian congestion at airports.

Thoughtful and Interactive Design Process

The universal design committee organized approximately forty universal design workshops and reflected the opinions collected from a wide range of users to the detailed drawing of the terminal. The members also visited existing airport facilities and used mock-ups to assess the effect of the design plan. As a result of these joint design efforts, the terminal successfully provides seamless access to public transportation, especially railways. It also progressively introduced world-class terminal facilities with the Universal Design concept; Multipurpose toilets, boarding bridges, and versatile concierge service and communication devices exemplify its novelty.

Airport terminals require several special facilities related to a series of air travel procedures, such as security checks, embarking and disembarking, immigration, and lengthy waiting times. To increase access to the terminal for everyone, the usability of all facilities needs to be scrutinized and should reflect the voices from a range of actual users.

Road Map for Sand dam implementation

Practical implementation steps include:

  • Site selection and community involvement;
  • Engineering and design;
  • Water use assessment;
  • Excavation and construction;
  • Operation and maintenance (establishment of water management process, including: Water committee, care takers and provision of trainings)
  • Monitoring and evaluation

 

  • The presence of communities (nomads or permanently during dry period)
  • The slope of the river beds: the most suitable locations have a slope between 2 to 4 percent)
  • Average width of the river, which should not exceed 25-50 meter
  • The rivers should be underlain by bedrock
  • Strong raised river banks 

The sand dam construction process is always unique for each site since it depends on topography, availability of local materials and community participation.

Support from local institutions and grassroots organizations

The Project Unit Coordinator has been forming an alliance with local governments, research centers and grassroots organizations with specific presence in each of the project basins. This way, effective communication with producers and other actors in the territory could be ensured. Thanks to the network of local NGOs, information and results workshops had high levels of impact and thereby allowed for a more efficient translation of stakeholder insights into practicable solutions in the field. Examples of this support on the ground include: i) the management of different interests and potential conflicts between actors in the Cofre de Perote NPP; ii) the connection of governmental social assistance programs, subsidies, etc., to river basin zones that coincide with the project, which in turn created useful synergies; iii) the establishment of coordinated lines of work from the government level to protected natural areas (ANP) and to CSOs; iv) the coalition among CSOs has had impact on the river basin and in reducing costs, by making complementary use of the different capacities of the actors involved.

  • A network of NGOs experienced enough to offer practical training to producers;
  • Existing levels of organization of communities, producers, and local authorities on which to build initiatives, e.g. ejido assemblies, fishing cooperatives, rural production units, etc.;
  • A shared sense of identity and belonging among producers, communities and local authorities.
  • It has been vital to have a network of civil society organizations that collaborate in the project and help to promote good practices in the river basin.
  • Each basin is different, therefore having local CSOs and NGOs as partners of the project has allowed better tailoring of project activities according to the characteristics of each community or zone.
  • It is essential, however, to have a good management and coordination of the CSO/NGO network to ensure that all involved stakeholders are aware of each others' activities.
Key elements for ecosystem conservation are also anthropic

As part of PAMIC, great consideration on the dynamics of landscape transformation is being made. There is an attempt to identify and conserve those elements that are key for ecosystem conservation, whether they are of natural or anthropic origin. In PAMIC´s philosophy, conservation does not mean maintaining pristine ecosystems. On the contrary, conservation includes restoring managed landscapes and using sustainable practices. This allows the maintenance of the whole socio-ecological system through a sustainable use of the land, as demonstrated by shade-grown coffee production, agro-silvo-pastoral and community forest management projects, which support both livelihoods and ecosystems. 

  • Confidence in the social and environmental benefits of sustainable community management
  • Institutional learning about the long term limitations of the "do not touch" vision of conservation as a means of conserving ecosystems;
  • Network of actors with knowledge on land use and water management 
  • Long term mentoring of the producers;
  • It is vital to make use of existing local cooperatives to generate, lead and manage the introduction of new approaches to existing productive activities
  • When communities feel that their productive activities are not being threatened, they are more willing to get involved and undertake self-organized initiatives for the sustainable management of ecosystems.
  • Likewise, when they identify the project as a window of opportunity to obtain support and possible financing to improve their productive activities, the commitment and interest to sustainably manage the ecosystem increases.
Partnership between MAVA Foundation and KfW

A strong partnership between MAVA Foundation and KfW (on behalf of the German government) enabled the creation of PONT in 2015. Both partners have invested considerable funds in the Prespa region in the past in different projects and to sustain their efforts in perpetuity they joined forces to mobilise enough money to give PONT a great start. Successful fundraising allowed for several geographical expansions in 2021.The endowment and sinking funds enable PONT to co-finance the work of the protected areas and NGOs until at least 2040.

Willingness by two strong donors for long-term financing of a biodiversity hotspot

 

Each donor has its geographical limitations but join forces to conserve the entire ecoregion

Creation of synergies by experiences in supporting NGOs and the government sector

 

Support by other actors such as WWF Greece, Frankfurt Zoological Society, Caucasus Nature Fund, EuroNatur and CEPF

Two strong donors invested in a specific geographical area, a biodiversity hotspot, in different projects. Both donors understood that to conserve this area it is important to secure long-term financing within and across state boundaries both for protected area management bodies as well as the civil society. It was understood that the financing gaps were mainly in the financing of running/operational costs. Both parties joined forces through the creation of a transboundary conservation trust fund to make this happen as they couldn't achieve the funding coverage of the entire landscape on their own. They did this with the help of strong partners with extensive knowledge in the PONT Focus Region i.e. WWF Greece and the Frankfurt Zoological Society. WWF Greece conducted the feasibility study on behalf of MAVA Foundation and KfW with the help of funding by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF). Caucasus Nature Fund and the Frankfurt Zoological Society gave important inputs as well.
